News outlets have reported that another cruise ship passenger has gone overboard during a cruise ship. This time a female passenger, age 46, reportedly went overboard from the Norwegian Cruise Line ship the Norwegian Star, last weekend. The passenger, a British woman, was found swimming in the waters approximately ten hours after falling overboard.   She was taken to a hospital and treated for exhaustion, but is in stable condition.

cruise-300x198We are pleased to report that this particular incident involving yet another passenger falling overboard from a cruise ship ended with a successful rescue of the passenger. This is not always the case. This particular passenger must’ve been a very good swimmer, and it is quite remarkable to have endured 10 hours in the water before being rescued.

Multiple Man Overboard Incidents Thus Far in 2018

According to one source, 17 people have reportedly gone overboard on cruise ships this year alone.. This continues to be a problem year after year. The problem caught the attention of Congress, who passed legislation requiring cruise ship companies to implement technology for an automatic man overboard systems designed to detect when someone goes overboard a cruise ship so that a prompt search and rescue can be initiated. The sooner a search and rescue effort is started, the more likelihood there is of saving the overboard passenger’s life. This case is yet another example that people can survive a fall from a cruise ship, and that it is possible to rescue a person who has fallen off the cruise ship if prompt detection and rescue efforts are made. Today Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that they will begin employing lifeguards at their family pools this summer. I have been advocating for years that cruise ship companies should step up to the plate and pay the money to put lifeguards at the swimming attractions onboard cruise ships.  These days, mega cruise ships have major swimming attractions, and drowning is a serious risk aboard these cruise ships.  I have seen way too many drownings that could have been prevented.

lifeguard-263x300Previously, Disney cruise lines was the only cruise ship company that had decided to place lifeguards at the swimming attractions on board their ships after the near-drowning of a four-year-old on one of their cruises. However, despite the fact that drownings continued on board cruises, the other major cruise ship companies including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess and Holland America Lines, continued to not have lifeguards on their ships.
